Written by the present day fifty-somethingDhafer to his teenage-self, the latest release of the Tunisian oud player, vocalist and songwriter, Street of minarets (2023), is a gift for dreamers, lovers and fighters. An album that has taken five years of research and hard work. When Dhafer had finished, he felt it could be improved or that it was missing soul. After overcoming obstacles that included intense anxiety in addition to vocal surgery during the pandemic, he found the motivation he needed to rewrite the album. The result is a journey of suffering and success ultimately highlighting his inspiring resilience.
Over the course of his two-and-a-half-decade career, Dhafer has released nine studio albums showcasing his ability to transcend genres and borders through the fusion of folklore, new age, world music, jazz and electronic music. A talent that has earned him the 2006 BBC Award for World Music and 2017 Edison Award, media praise from publications such as The Guardian, The Times, The Evening Standard, Downbeat Magazine and Jazzwise, among others, and a spot on the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Culture Organization’s 2015 All-Star Global Concert, or working in the field of music for film for Ridley Scott in Exodus: Gods and Kings, or James Horner in The Amazing Spider-Man and Day of the falcon / Black gold.
