Femi Kuti is the heart and soul of modern Afrobeat, a style that continues the legacy of his father Fela Kuti and which inspired several generations of musicians, in Nigeria and around the world, by using music as a weapon to fight for justice and freedom. Femi and his band The Positive Force are at the forefront of this movement, continually expanding the music’s vocabulary, adding hints of punk and hip-hop while maintaining its roots and political message. .
Fela Kuti created Afrobeat –a blend of traditional Nigerian (Yoruba) drum rhythms, the smooth and delicate groove of the Ghana highlife, and American soul, funk and R&B– which became popular in the 1970s and 1980s with strong and insistent dance beats and lyrics bristling with political statements that spoke the truth.
A quarter of a century after the death of the legendary musician and human rights activist Fela Kuti, his message and his fight against colonialism and corruption in Africa is kept alive all over the world through his son: “Music helps me fight for better living conditions on my continent. We can't wait for a leader to come, every person has to fight for a better Africa.”
