"This proposal was conceived at the outset of the 2018 European Year of Cultural Heritage as a modern-day theatrical and artistic concept based on the study and respect for the original work to be shared with contemporary audiences. The idea was to show the art, history and protagonists of our artistic heritage from a conceptual perspective based on a contemporary narrative and dramaturgy of characters, actions and artistic elements of the opera in contrast with a conservationist and museological view of the past.
The protagonists are characterised as historical characters and at the same time as the main characters of this melodrama, evolving throughout the opera with the music towards humanisation that arises from their actions and feelings.

The opera La Favorite covers different time periods, presented as contemporary and simultaneous in the 21st century:
1311-1350 – chronology of the historical figures of Alfonso XI of Castile and Leonor de Guzmán, the story’s main characters;
1840 – premier in Paris of grand opera with music by Donizetti and a libretto by Royer, Vaëz and Scribe on an earlier play written by Baculard d´Arnaud in 1764;
1820 – chronology of Louis Philippe d’Orléans, King of Naples. The opera L’ange de Nisida (The Angel of Nisida), written in 1839 with music by Donizetti and a libretto by Royer and Vaëz, was rediscovered in 2018 and used as a source by the authors for La Favorite;
2018 – European Year of Cultural Heritage, date of this project of La Favorite, an opera that currently forms part of the repertoire of opera theatres in Europe and all over the world."   Curro Carreres, Stage Director
