Hand programme (ESP)

Warsaw 1939. The theatre company of the Turas, a married couple. settles in a theatre to rehearse the play Gestapo!, a satire of the threat that Hitler and Nazis represent for the rest of the world. At the same time, they perform Hamlet, whose verse “to be or not to be” will be the clue of an extramarital affair. Their problems increase when the Polish authorities prohibit the premiere of Gestapo! to avoid retaliation by Hitler, although this will not impede that Germany invade Poland. With the theatre half destroyed by the bombarding, the actors will have to come up with a double theatrical plot to deactivate delivery of a document that would put an end to the Resistance, and to allow them to flee from Poland to England, the land of Shakespeare. This will require, with a display of great acting talent, that they pass themselves off as Nazis. In the meantime, the Turas will have to resolve the emergence in their marriage of a young RAF aviator, who has converted the couple’s life into a vaudeville, adding even more to the drama.
