On the 1st of December 1934, Serguéi Kírov, leader of the Communist Party of the Leningrad section, was assassinated by gunshot. Stalin uses his death as an excuse to initiate a random wave of detentions of any Soviet citizen who is minimally suspicious of being considered counterrevolutionary, and thus an “enemy of the people”. Lidia Chukóvskaia and Anna Ajmátova have known each other since1938, during the worst moments of the Great Purge. The former’s husband, Matvéi Bronstein, and the latter’s son, Lev Gumiliov, have been arrested for no apparent motive. Since then, the two women develop a close friendship that will last all their lives.
A singular story of women who fight clandestinely and in fear for justice which they are denied on the basis of ever-present political party interests.
