2020 marked the 100th anniversary of the death of Benito Perez Galdós, one of Spain’s most iconic authors. His life and literary career were commemorated with a programme of activities, including Torquemada, under the direction of artistic and theatrical director Juan Carlos Perez de la Fuente.
Ascent and Fall of Francisco Torquemada, a miserable neighbourhood usurer who boasts (although we never believe him) that he is a descendent of the famous inquisitor, and who through a series of unforeseen events is first converted into a respectable businessman, then a senator and later a marquis, to finally find himself obliged to question the meaning of his social ascent on coming face to face with illness and death.
The premiere of Torquemada at Teatros del Canal, with an incredible Pedro Casablanc transformed into multiple characters, was a triumph.
