The sisters Claire and Solange Lemercier are the maids of a lady of the high French bourgeoisie. Every night they initiate a perverse ceremony, a ritual in which reality and fiction mix in a mortal game of altered identity. Claire is the lady of the house and Solange is Claire. Solange is the lady of the house and Claire is Solange. They are alienated, lacking an identity. There is no good sister and bad sister; the two are constantly alternating roles because neither exists on her own, because they are the two sides of the same character. The anger and rage of being aware of their destiny as maids lead them to a fatal outcome.
