Nekrassov, intelligent and amusing, and the only comedy written by Jean Paul Sartre, is a ferocious criticism of the fourth power and its ideological positions for political or economic purposes. Written in 1955 in the midst of the Cold War, the play is still very relevant in our times of disinformation, post-truth and fake news. In order to survive, the conservative newspaper Soir à Paris urgently needs attractive news, whether true or false. What better lure than the statements of the Russian Minister of the Interior Nikita Nekrassov, who has just deserted.
Here too Sartre reflects on individual freedom, the human contradictions between thought and action, and the confrontation between personal ethics and moral duty.
