A naive and tranquil maiden is sold by her mother to Zampano, a rowdy and violent circus strongman, to help him with his travelling show. A flicker of love appears between them, but does not grow because of his pride and her shyness. Both share a feeling of deep solitude and a life of marginalisation, estrangement and misery until they come across The Fool, another circus artist who will provoke Zampano’s jealousy, leading to a tragic ending. Poetry and misery to reflect post-war Italy.
