Program notes Jose Antonio Canton

Richard Wagner’s opera Tannhäuser is based on the main character’s struggle between the sexual attraction of Venus and his religious duty and pure love for Elisabeth, the daughter of the feudal lord of Thuringia. Tannhäuser goes on a pilgrimage to Rome in search of redemption, which he is denied. He returns from such a negative experience to persevere in his search for forgiveness and is redeemed by Elisabeth’s prayers on her death. The overture functions well as the beginning or end of a traditional symphonic concert.
Alexander Glazunov composed his Violin Concerto in A minor, Op 82 between 1904-1905, at the peak of his fame in Russia. It was partly composed in Petrograd, and partly at his summer house in Oserki, where the natural surroundings of the forest and the lake inspired the work’s lyrical tone.
In February 1907, Rachmaninoff wrote to a friend about a rumour published in the Russian press: “It’s true, I have composed a symphony. It is only a rough draft. I finished it a month ago and immediately put it aside. It has been a huge concern for me and I am not going to think about it anymore. But I am perplexed how the press found out about this.”  Following the failure of his First Symphony, Op.13 Rachmaninoff recovered his sense of self-worth as a composer, and in particular as a symphonist, on winning the prestigious  'Glinka Prize' for his Symphony in E minor, Op. 27.
