Hector Berlioz conceived the first project for Le Corsaire Overture during his stay in Rome in 1831, continuing with the composition in Nice, where he spent a few weeks before returning to Paris. He went over the score in 1844, when he was back in the capital of the Côte d’Azur, which caused him to change the title for The Tower of Nice, going back to the original name when it was premiered at the Cirque Olympique in Paris on the 19th of January 1845.

Pyotr IlyichTchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto, Op.35 is the most important work of its class in the Russian repertoire. The composer began writing the Concerto in 1878 in the village of Clarens, in Switzerland, where he had settled following the failure of his marriage to Antonina Miliukova. It was first performed at the Philharmonic Society in Vienna on the 4th of December 1881, with its dedicatee Adolph Brodsky as the soloist and Hans Richter as conductor.

The name of the well-known Variations on an Original Theme "Enigma" by Sir Edward Elgar, the most noteworthy British musician during Queen Victoria’s time, is due to the mysterious titles the composer gave each one of the fourteen pieces.
