Following the failure of the first performance of his Symphony no. 1, Serguei Rachmaninov fell into a depression and was unable to compose for nearly three years. He was so depressed that he recurred to Dr. Nikolai Dahl for treatment. With his methods of hypnosis, the psychoanalyst was able to improve the musician’s frustrating symptomatology and regenerate in the latter a renewed confidence in his creative capacity. The result of the composer’s recovery was his Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, Op. 18 which was dedicated to the psychotherapist in gratitude for his help.
The evening is completed with orchestral arrangements of a series of popular Christmas carols by authors whose technical capacity is well-known, including the Spanish-American Juanjo Colomer, a musician experienced in music scores for film; and by versions of other famous Christmas carols adapted by Alber Guinovart, great connoisseur of the Spanish and Romantic repertoire as a pianist, profesor of composition and instrumentation at the Superior School of Music of Catalonia and a composer of a wide range of forms and styles.
