Prokokief spent nearly ten years on the composition of his Piano Concerto no. 3 in C major, Op.26. He had the first ideas for one of the first movement motifs 1911, whereas the theme with five variations in the second movement is from 1913. For the final Allegro he used material that was initially intended for a quartet in 1918 which he never finished.

Tarás Bulba is a rhapsody for orchestra with three episodes written in 1915 and revised in 1918. It is inspired by a historical novel of the same title by Nikolai Gogol, with which he sought to create a dramatic musical reminiscence of the death of this 15th century Cossak hero.

Considered to be one of his most popular pieces and the most interesting of his orchestral repertoire, Janácek composed his Sinfonietta for the Festival of the Sokol Gymnastic Organisation. The inspiration of military Marches is noteworthy, and explains why it is dedicated to the Armed Forces of his country.
