Although Charles Tolliver is one of the most discrete musicians of jazz, he is well-known amongst the genre’s connoisseurs. Together with Lee Morgan and Freddie Hubbard, Charles Tolliver is one of the most noteworthy trumpet players of all times, as well as an outstanding composer, orchestra conductor and music arranger. His technique is brilliant, vibrant and avant-garde, and he always resolves the challenge of improvisation in a masterly manner. Paper man (1968) is one of the three albums that Charles Tolliver recorded for the label Black Lion accompanied by Herbie Hancock (piano), Ron Carter (bass), Joe Chambers (drums) and Gary Bartz (saxophone), and which includes six of his own pieces. The musician from Jacksonville has been on tour since last year, celebrating the 50th anniversary of his iconic album debut as leader.
