The Municipal Musical Band of Malaga [Banda Municipal de Música], one of the oldest in Spain, was founded in 1859 at a time of growing interest in the musical arts which crystallised with the creation of the Sociedad Filarmónica de Málaga in 1869 and the construction of the Cervantes Theatre in 1870.
It is difficult to summarise in a few lines the Band’s versatility, the scope of its mission and the important role it has played in the life of the city. With the objective of disseminating and bringing music to the people of Malaga and contributing to musical education, it prepares concert programmes on a yearly basis, in addition to performances for the city’s districts and citizen associations. Furthermore, in its premises the Band organises educational concerts for school children through the programme ‘Málaga para los escolares’ [‘Malaga for schoolchildren’], which in the past twenty years have been attended by more than one hundred thousand students.
The Band has a typical concert band repertoire, which also includes transcriptions and suites of zarzuela and arrangements  of symphonic compositions.
More than 400 musicians and 60 interns have performed at its concerts under the direction  of the thirteen conductors it has had in the course of its long history.
