La rosa del azafrán, a free adaptation of the comedy El perro del hortelano by Lope de Vega, was written during the last period of splendor of “zarzuela grande”. It is Guerrero’s last zarzuela, in which he showed his desire to absorb popular elements, expressing them directly in rhythms and melodies. La rosa del azafrán is one of the most emblematic and beautiful works of this genre, with constant references to love that is as fragile as the autumn saffron [azafrán in Spanish] flower “that blooms at sunrise and dies at dusk”, as sung by the zarzuela’s main character.
