La Revoltosa
Sainete [lyrical farce] in one act by Ruperto Chapí on a libretto by José López Silva and Carlos Fernández.
Considered, together “La verbena de la Paloma”, as one of the outstanding works of the género chico [little genre], La Revoltosa is a true portrait of the atmosphere, people and situations of a typical Madrid neighbourhood at the end of the 19th century.  Mix ups and jealousy close in on the pretty, flirtatious and rebellious Mari Pepa ‘la Revoltosa’, Felipe and the residents of the corrala [tenement] where they live, leading to a touching, happy ending. The a score, which merges highbrow and popular elements, includes legendary pieces such as the main characters’ duet “¿Por qué de mis ojos los tuyos retiras?”, the seguidilla “Al pie de tu ventana” and the guajira “Cuando clava mi Moreno”.

The programme concludes with a selection of famous musical fragments depicting the most authentic Madrid of the time, including the “Vals del Caballero de Gracia”, the “Tangos de Menegilda y doña Virtudes” and the “Chotis del Eliseo madrileño” from the zarzuela La Gran Vía, as well as the passacaglia from Agua, azucarillos y aguardiente [Water, Sweets and Spirits], both composed by the maestro Federico Chueca.
