It has been written that with Katiuska, Pablo Sorozábal’s first zarzuela, Spanish music lost a composer of symphonies and gained a composer of musical theatre. His dedication to this zarzuela is revealed in a very intricate score, elegant orchestration of great dramatic force, lyrical fantasy and Slavic local colour, which also includes notes of burlesque and variety show. This is one of Sorozábal’s most performed works, in which two of its fourteen vocal numbers, the duet ‘Somos dos barcas’ and the romance ‘La mujer rusa’ rapidly gained great popularity.
